Tax on foreign donations

Post by DByrden » Mon Dec 11, 2017 1:18 pm

This is a slightly unusual issue, maybe you've met it before...

While living and working in Austria long-term, we want to donate to a Canadian charity. They are also registered in the USA and I think in the UK, so we could donate to any one of those countries.

But - we want to claim this donation against our Austrian taxes.

Is this allowed, and if so, need we do anything special?

Thank you in advance.

The issue is known as Spendenabsetzbarkeit but I haven't yet located which law (Gesetz or Verordnung) regulates or defines what charitable donations can be offset.
Vienna is like an Ikea sofa - you know you should upgrade, but why bother when it is this comfortable.

From a quick reading of the above page, it doesn't seem like it is possible to be able to offset a donation to a foreign charity against Austrian tax - the Income Tax Act 1988 (EStG 1988) is apparently where it is defined. The charity would need to be registered and have a permanent administrative decision about its eligibility from the Finanzamt / BMF. I'd be highly surprised it that was the case.

Would agree with morgenhund - although if you still also do a Canadian tax return, surely offset it from that.
